The Houston Botanic Garden is a privately operated 501(c)(3) organization created by individuals committed to the conservation and cultivation of plants with the goal of designing, constructing, and operating a botanic garden in Houston, Texas.
The Board of Directors is prepared to commence a capital campaign to fund the planning, design and construction of the Botanic Garden once a site has been secured.
To establish and sustain a premier botanic garden in order to promote public appreciation and understanding of plants, gardens, and conservation of the natural world through education, conservation, and scientific inquiry.
We will enrich people’s lives through outstanding displays and programs, serve as a model for sustainability, and inspire all who visit to become environmental stewards as they learn more about plants and the entire natural world. In the fourth largest metropolitan area in the country, our Botanic Garden will be a place of great beauty providing an oasis for quiet contemplation, learning, inspiration, and research.
The HBG is currently in negotiation with the City of Houston for a site on which to construct the Botanic Garden. The Board’s preference is the Wortham park site at Lawndale Street and S. Wayside Drive in the East End, which would also provide a 25 acre City park for general use. This site is easily accessible to the new Metro Light Rail line which will provide convenient access to those traveling from Downtown, the Northside, the Museum District, the Texas Medical Center, the Third Ward, and the East End.
